What is it?
Runner’s Knee, also known as Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome, affects the area between the kneecap and the femur, or thigh bone. This condition is characterized by pain around the kneecap, especially where the thighbone and the kneecap meet.
Do I have it?
The primary symptom for Runner’s Knee is pain in the knee, especially when you bend the knee.
What causes it?
Repetitive stress on your knee joints, such as that sustained during running or jumping, can irritate the nerves of the kneecap or the overstretched tendons responsible for holding the kneecap in place. In some cases, misalignment may play a role in not allowing physical stress to be evenly distributed throughout the knee joint, subjecting this area to increased stress.
How can I help prevent it?
- Cut back your mileage and avoid repetitive stress on your knee joints, such as that sustained during running or jumping
- Add orthotic inserts or insoles designed to help absorb the shock of running
