Nail Problems

DESCRIPTION

Nail fungus is called onychomycosis. It is common in people who frequent public pools, gyms and showers or who perspire a great deal. Fungus thrives in warm, moist areas. Wearing closed footwear, having prolonged moist skin or having athlete's foot and minor nail injuries increases the chance of developing nail fungus. Fungal toenails are more common than fungal fingernails.

Ingrown toenails are called onychocryptosis. This is a common condition in which the edge of the toenail grows into the skin of the toe, or the skin of the side of the toe grows over the toenail. While any toe may be affected, it is most common in the big toe. Wearing tight shoes, keeping toenails trimmed too short or rounding toenails may increase your chance of developing ingrown toenails.

HOW TO RECOGNIZE IT

Nail fungus: thick, brittle, discolored nails (may be white and opaque). Nail shape may be distorted. Nail may be detached (loose), and there may be debris under the nail.

Ingrown toenails: pain, redness, increased warmth and swelling around a toenail (usually the big toe).
