Hip Pain

Hip Pain FAQs

Sciatica is the most common cause of hip pain that radiates down the leg. Sciatica is pain along the sciatic nerve. Each side of the body has a sciatic nerve, which runs through the hips and buttocks and then continues down one leg, extending just past the knee. Sciatica can be felt in the lower back, buttocks, hips and down the leg. There may also be numbness and tingling in the leg as well as the foot.

Other conditions such as inflammatory arthritis can cause pain in the hips as well as the legs. It’s important to see your healthcare provider for an evaluation in order to determine the cause of your hip and leg pain.

There are many different causes of pain in the hips. In order to determine the exact cause, it’s important to see a healthcare provider for an evaluation. Some of the most common causes of pain in the hips include arthritis, a fracture of the hip, tendinitis of the hip, hip bursitis and hip impingement.

Hip pain can be felt anywhere within the hip joint as well as around the hip area. The exact location of hip pain can help indicate the source of the issue. When hip pain is concentrated on the inside of the hip, it’s often an indication of an issue with the hip joint. On the other hand, if the pain is felt along the outside of the hip, it’s most likely caused by an issue with soft tissues around the hip, such as ligaments and tendons.

Most of the primary causes of hip pain in women are the same as in men. However, some causes of hip pain are more common in women.

• Certain types of arthritis, especially osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, are more prevalent among women than they are among men. Both types of arthritis can lead to hip pain.

• Hip fractures are a common source of hip pain. This type of injury is more common in women than in men due to bone loss that occurs because of menopause.

One cause of hip pain that’s unique to women is pregnancy. It’s not uncommon for women to experience hip pain during pregnancy, especially in the third trimester, as the body prepares for labor.

Hip pain from arthritis is primarily felt in the groin area. It’s also possible, but less common, to feel pain in the outside of the high and the upper area of the buttocks.

There are a number of ways to help relieve hip pain while sleeping.

Change positions — If your hip hurts when lying in bed, adjust your position until you find one that’s more comfortable. If you’re a side sleeper, avoid sleeping directly on a painful hip. Instead, sleep on the other side.

Firm mattress — A high quality mattress can make a big difference with hip pain. Choose a firm mattress with good support.

Extra pillows — Sleeping with extra pillows can help alleviate hip pain. When sleeping on your side, place a pillow between your legs. When sleeping on your back, place a pillow underneath your knees.

Hip flexor pain from a strain is typically felt in the front of the hip where the hip joins the thigh. There may be a pulling or cramping sensation in the front area of the hip.
